MSC Musica Enters Final Phase of Construction

The 89,600-ton MSC Musica, shown in this artist's rendering, will be MSC's largest ship, and debut July 1 (2006) with a 7-night Mediterranean program from Venice. It features calls in Bari (Italy), Katakolon (Greece), Izmir (Turkey), Istanbul and Dubrovnik. The vessel will carry 2,550 passengers.
The ship's funnel was constructed with a new technique that results in a perfectly smooth exterior to reduce wind resistance. Shown here just before it was lifted into place atop the ship, it weighs 65 tons, is 36 feet high and has a 196-foot circumference.
The ship is shown here at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard in the building dock just before it was flooded, allowing the vessel to float for the first time.
Once afloat, MSC Musica was towed to the finishing dock at the St. Nazaire (France) yard, where it will remain until sea trials, while the interior is fitted out.
