Equinox Goes Down the River

Celebrity Equinox is shown here at Meyer Werft in Papenburg (Germany) on the night of June 19 (2009) awaiting clearance to proceed down the Ems River. It's a delicate operation with, in many places, only inches to spare on either side of the ship as well as under it. For that reason, the ship must wait until the tidal and weather conditions are exactly right. Celebrity Equinox along with its sister, Celebrity Solstice, are the largest ships Meyer Werft has ever had to transport down the Ems.
The transit of the river takes the ship through the beautiful German and Dutch countryside. Although you can't really tell it, from the photos, the ship is actually going backward down river (stern first) for better maneuverability, according to the yard.
Because many towns are built around the river, the ships go right through town.
We have additional photos of the river conveyance in our Flickr account.

These photos are courtesy of Meyer Werft and of a reader, Rolf Declerck.

Below is a video story taken during the conveyance.
